Before Arkham's business

Born in Kingsport in 1902, the eldest of a fisherman's six. She once saw something in the woods above Dunwich and has never told anyone what. Has worked as a surgeon for 7 years, and knows the inside of people.

Earnest, melancholy and sceptical, with a sardonic wit. She is formal with strangers and warm with friends. She is frightened of most things and goes anyway. She will not lie, even to spare feelings.

Afraid of

fire · heights

Believes

You look after your own, and your own is whoever's in front of you.

From the journal

Monday, 27 September 1926

Somebody here keeps a lamp in the window every night. I asked why. "Habit," they said.

Saturday, 25 September 1926

Her brother's family in Haverhill. A letter from Arkham today. I didn't open it until after supper. Played cards and lost forty cents with dignity.

Wednesday, 22 September 1926

Leaving Arkham for a while — to visit her brother's family in Haverhill. Recorded. Moving on. Observed a clock stopped on the mantel.

Tuesday, 21 September 1926

Walked the long way home, by the river. I always do. There's a sensible explanation. There always is.
