Before Arkham's business

Born in Salem in 1890, brought up above a dry-goods store. He was widowed in the influenza of 1918. Has worked as a curate for 1 year, and knows confession, and what it costs.

Brave, melancholy and loud, with a dry sense of humour. He prefers one good friend to a room full of acquaintances. He is brave when it counts and careful otherwise. He will do almost anything to learn the truth.

Afraid of

dogs · deep water

There's an explanation for everything, if you can stand to hear it.

From the journal

Monday, 4 October 1926

I must see Vance. Tomorrow, without fail.

Saturday, 2 October 1926

Met Vance at Kellerman's Lunch Room. The milkman looked at me sideways this morning. He can keep his opinions to himself. Before us was a clock stopped on the mantel.

Friday, 1 October 1926

I must write it now, while it is fresh, God help me. I saw a door open that had been left shut, and I did not like it. The candle was warm. Someone had been standing at that window seconds before. It is worse.

Friday, 1 October 1926

Reached Whateley Residence at 10.00 p.m. Before us was a single lamp burning low. There it was — The Lit Window. The upstairs window of the burned house on Gallows Lane is lit most nights, a dull amber, though the house has been boarded since 1911 and has no gas. Nothing obviously out of the ordinary.

Friday, 1 October 1926

Residents of Gallows Lane report a light in the burned house. I heard it at 11.07 a.m. and went, though I had supper on the table. I saw moss in the lettering, and I did not like it. We heard crows.

Wednesday, 29 September 1926

Before us was wallpaper lifting at the seams. God willing, that's the worst of it. A dry trench shouldn't sound like running water.
