Before Arkham's business
Served with the 369th Infantry in France. Came home to Harlem, then north to Arkham for a client and stayed. Rents the office over Pelham's grocery.
Quiet, dry-humoured, steady. Watches exits. Arkham's police do not return his calls; its dockhands do.

People do terrible things. Sometimes something helps them.
From the journal
Somebody has written to tell me to go back to Miskatonic University Library. I had been telling myself the same thing all week.
Got to Blakemore House — the Collector's Residence about 9.00 p.m. We examined a key too old for any lock in the building. It is older than it looks. Library records show MS 1147 withdrawn in 1750, in 1882 and last month — each time by a man who then disappeared. I read it twice and wished I hadn't.
Got to Blakemore House — the Collector's Residence 7.00 p.m. The accounts don't match. Everard Blakemore says it came from the cellar. A neighbour across the street says the roof. Halsey's notes refer to 'the third door' as though it were a place he had been.
Reached Blakemore House — the Collector's Residence at 9.00 p.m. Found The Coachman's Account. Blakemore's coachman, well oiled, admits he drives the carriage to the Carver warehouse most nights at three. 'Took the Professor once. An office door is found open that the porter swears was locked.
Sat up writing a reply to a stranger. Posted it on the way to work.
Neighbours on French Hill report a carriage leaving Blakemore House nightly at three. Heard it from a man who owes me. Figured I'd collect. I saw a clock stopped on the mantel.
