Before Arkham's business

Born in Savannah, ordained in Philadelphia, sent north to a congregation that meets in the Mission's hall. Shares the building, and a long friendship, with Sister Keane.

Warm, booming, funny, immovable on questions of right. Preaches short and visits long.

From the journal

Saturday, 2 October 1926

Hampton Beach. Walked for three hours and did not once look over my shoulder. Counted it a victory. Before us was wallpaper lifting at the seams.

Thursday, 30 September 1926

Going to Philadelphia for the Conference. Sister Keane has promised to preach if I'm not back. The congregation has promised to pray that I am. Sister Keane and I have argued about the heating for the ninth year running.

Monday, 27 September 1926

Helped the carters haul a dray out of the marsh-mud by the docks. Good men, though foul-mouthed. Shared a table with Dennis at Southside Mission & Free Clinic. Dennis had already been waiting ten minutes and made sure we knew it.

Sunday, 26 September 1926

Only got to the Gazette tonight. Nothing in it that touched on any of this. A relief, of a kind. Lost at cards to Reeves at the Bethel. Lost handsomely.

Saturday, 25 September 1926

Home from Philadelphia. Came in on the evening train and went straight to the hall. The roof still leaks. The hymns still keep time.
