Before Arkham's business
Thirty years walking the Riverside beat. Knows every drunk, every widow and every back door. Eighteen months from his pension and counting.
Gregarious, sentimental, lazy until it matters. Tells a story better than he writes one.
Afraid of
Losing the pension · The Old Stone Bridge after dark
Believes
Arkham has always been queer. You keep your head down and your lamp lit.
From the journal
Worcester. Dreamt of Arkham anyway. The dream did not follow me out of bed, which is new. Just old wood and salt air playing tricks on people who read too much.
Worcester. A letter from Arkham today. I didn't open it until after supper. Rain. Everybody grumbling.
