Before Arkham's business
Grew up over her father's pharmacy in Chelsea. Doctorate from Radcliffe the men pretend is not a doctorate. Teaches freshman chemistry and does real work at night.
Sharp, funny, furious at sloppiness. Hides kindness behind precision.

From the journal
I am not going back to Hilltop Dairy. I have decided.
Found a passage in the coroner's ledgers that resists my notes. A misprint, perhaps, but an awkward one. An old tax assessor's ledger, 1789: a child who would not stop talking about a visitor at Hilltop Dairy. The clerk added "not to be repeated", and then repeated it. Reading my notes on the business at Hilltop Dairy from Tuesday, I sound like a curate at a séance.
Lowell and I argued. Lowell has had a fright and is reasoning backwards from it. A ridiculous entry on Tuesday concerning the business at Hilltop Dairy. Indigestion and twilight make poor philosophers. That's all.
Only got to the Gazette tonight. The Gazette has it as "Hilltop Dairy Affair Remains a Puzzle". That is the least of it. I keep coming back to the business at Hilltop Dairy, and each time I find another ordinary explanation, and each time it's not quite enough. First thing tomorrow I'll go through a probate inventory.
Measurements first. Observed a door open that had been left shut. Poison. Someone is poisoning the wells. Inconclusive.

Arrived Hilltop Dairy at 7.59 p.m. Labelled six jars before I took my coat off. Reeves smoked the whole time, which at least covered the smell. Visual: a path gone to moss. A lock-keeper records the river running upstream for eleven minutes.
