Before Arkham's business

From Trois-Rivières by way of Lowell. Photographs weddings for money and the river for herself. Rents Lyman's darkroom three days a week.

Watchful, funny, private. Sees in terms of light and exposure and says so.

Believes

The camera sees what's there. People see what they expect.

From the journal

Thursday, 30 September 1926

Taking the train to Lowell to see Maman. She will ask when I'm getting married. I will ask about her knees. A clean towel, a red bulb, and half an hour.

Wednesday, 29 September 1926

Rain all day, the kind that gets inside the camera bag. Printed indoors and swore in French. Picture it: narrow stairs climbing into the dark. People look at a portrait and see a soul.

Friday, 24 September 1926

Developed the river series. Two good plates out of twelve. That is a good day. You could hear a gramophone somewhere.

Thursday, 23 September 1926

Back from Lowell with a jar of cretons and a head full of Maman's questions. Arkham looks the same. It never does, quite. Steady hands.
