Before Arkham's business
Came up from Boston in 1924 after a paper there folded under her. Doyle gives her the police beat and spikes half of what she files.
Quick, sardonic, restless. Asks the second question everyone else is too polite to ask.

From the journal
Getting out of Arkham for a bit — work in Boston. The sound was footsteps, too loud. Picture it: wallpaper lifting at the seams. Coffee terrible.
Met Reeves at Kellerman's Lunch Room. There's a man behind this. There's always a man, and a motive, and a bank account. Reeves was solid tonight. I'd go through a door with Reeves again.
Got to Rare Books Room about 9.02 p.m. Here's the thing nobody's printing: The Empty Slot: MS 1147. The shelf slot for MS 1147, the Liber Aquarum, is empty. Halsey's notes refer to 'the third door' as though it were a place he had been. Somebody has known this for years.
Faculty Row — Halsey's Office, 9.02 p.m. Found it — 'Halsey's Unfinished Notes'. Took it down word for word: A draft translation in Halsey's tidy hand breaks off mid-line: '...and the third door, that is under the waters, shall be opened to him who reads the whole.' A shelf-mark is pencilled in the margin: MS 1147. An office door is found open that the porter swears was locked. Somebody has known this for years.
More tomorrow.
Tip came in at 1.47 p.m.: Porter reports Prof. Halsey absent from lectures; office found open. Grabbed my coat. Reeves was solid tonight. I'd go through a door with Reeves again.
