Twenty years on the force, twelve as a detective. Widowed in the influenza. Keeps a notebook for every case and has never lost one.

Patient, dry, methodical. Believes in procedure because procedure has never lied to him.

Afraid of

Being made a fool of · Losing another person he is responsible for

Believes

There is always a man behind it. Find the man.

From the journal

Sunday, 3 October 1926

Looked in at Arkham Historical Society. Ordinary. Thought about the figure at Arkham Historical Society again today. Drafts, likely. Old buildings have a way of settling.

Saturday, 2 October 1926

A letter under the door this morning. No stamp, no signature: "Stop asking about the Door. — A Friend" Sat on the cellar steps until the match burned down. Didn't strike another.

Friday, 1 October 1926

10.00 p.m. Odour: salt and rot and something older than both. I went back out to the street. A letter in the weeds. Children's mischief.

Friday, 1 October 1926

A letter came today about Arkham Historical Society. I read it once and could not read it again.

Thursday, 30 September 1926

8.00 p.m. Item: Eight Names. The Christ Church memorial to the lost of the Great Fog has eight lines. Seven bear names. The eighth is blank, and has been re-cut twice.

Wednesday, 29 September 1926

Met Ashcombe at Kellerman's Lunch Room. No sign of Ashcombe at the hour we agreed. Ashcombe came strolling in at twenty past. Counted the patrolmen twice at morning roll. Forgot young Miller was on leave.
