Before Arkham's business

Born in Boston's North End in 1900, raised in a house with more books than chairs. He once saw something in the woods above Dunwich and has never told anyone what. Has worked as a returned missionary for 9 years, and knows far places and their gods.

Stubborn, shy and sceptical, with no sense of humour at all, which is itself rather funny. He prefers one good friend to a room full of acquaintances. He takes risks without noticing he is taking them. He will not lie, even to spare feelings.

Afraid of

Believes

Nobody ever regretted minding their own business — except me.

From the journal

Sunday, 3 October 1926

Slept badly: the neighbour's dog. Shared a table with Lowell at St. Anne's Church. Lowell did not stop talking. I found I didn't mind.

Wednesday, 29 September 1926

A quiet day. I gave thanks for it. Whitfield was at Southside Mission & Free Clinic when I came in. Fish at Kellerman's.

Monday, 27 September 1926

A parcel of dry tea arrived from Batavia. It smells faintly of river mud. Ran into Whitfield at Southside Mission & Free Clinic. Whitfield was there before any of us, looking at a watch.

Sunday, 26 September 1926

My mother always said to write things down. I am starting now, rather late. I am a returned missionary, and until lately that was all anyone needed to know about me. A quiet day. Something is going on in Arkham, and I seem to have decided to find out what.
