Before Arkham's business

Forty years at sea: Grand Banks, the China run, a wreck off Sable Island he does not discuss. Now brings the coal boats up to the Basin and stays ashore.

Laconic, weather-wise, unshockable. Speaks in forecasts.

Afraid of

Confined spaces under water · Being useless ashore

Believes

The sea keeps what it wants. So does the river.

From the journal

Monday, 27 September 1926

Marblehead. Bought a postcard of the harbour to send to Arkham, and then did not send it. The harbourmaster wants the pilots in uniform caps. I have told him where he may stow his cap.

Friday, 24 September 1926

Marblehead. Walked for three hours and did not once look over my shoulder. Counted it a victory. Barometer at 29.8 and falling. Told everyone at the Bethel.

Wednesday, 22 September 1926

Marblehead. Quiet here. I don't think about Arkham much. Young Delgado fought on Saturday. Won in three.
